Indian table tennis star Soumyajit Ghosh won his opening match for the current 2021 UTT Contender Laskko qualifier on Monday and has advanced to the next round. Top Indian stars Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra will start their campaign from the main draw itself.
After a successful 2021 WTT Contender in Tunis, where Gnanasekara’s Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai reached the top of the men’s doubles prizes, the Indians are also gaining momentum in the ongoing WTT Contender Lasko. While the top stars have not yet launched their campaigns, others have hit the court.
On Monday, former champion Soumyajit Ghosh won French Alexis Lebrun’s 3-1 (11-9, 5-11, 14-12, 12-10) men’s singles qualifier in the opening round. The Olympics will face Brazilian Eric Jout in the next round.
On the other hand, two other Indians who were in action on Monday lost their matches. Sushmit Sriramin was convincingly defeated by Japanese Sora Matsushima, with scores of 11-5, 11-3, 11-8 in favor of the latter. Meanwhile, Jeet Chandra also used a lively fight before going down to Croatia’s Filip Cipin with points 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 9-11.
The other three – Manav Thakkar, Anthony Amalraj and Snehit Suravajjula, who said goodbye in the first qualifying round, will join Soumyajit Ghosh in the second round of the men’s singles qualifier. In the women’s singles, Selena Selvakumar, Sreeja Akula and Krittwika Roy said goodbye in the opening qualifying round and will start their campaign in the second round on Tuesday.
The 2021 UTT Conteder Lasko has four qualifying rounds before the main draw. Top Indian stars Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra will start their campaign from the main draw itself.
