After eight years at the helm of McLaren, Mike Flewitt is leaving managing the company’s road cars division. During his tenure, the former principal argued that the Woking spikes would not jump on SUVs, unlike the Aston Martin, Bentley and Lamborghini, whose Ferrari and its Purosangue are next in 2022.
The pressers shouldn’t worry, as McLaren hasn’t broken that promise, as this gorgeous SUV comes from the racing chamber. More specifically, it is a fully electric SUV that will participate in the second production season of the Extreme E series next year. Behind the wheel is Emma Gilmour, the first female driver to take part in the newly formed race. He’s part of a duo with no one but Tanner Foust.

The lovely orange coloring has been hand-drawn by artist and illustrator Vic Lee, and his drawings depict the Amazon, the desert and the Arctic Ocean to highlight where the Extreme E series is going next year. Attached to the roof is a visual nod to Bruce McLaren – born in New Zealand just like Emma Gilmour – and McLaren Racing’s “Count Us In” promise, noticeable up front.
As for the off-roader itself, it has juicy features. According to the official Extreme E website, all vehicles competing in the zero-emission racing series have two electric motors with a combined power of 543 horsepower (400 kilowatts), which is enough for 0-62 mph (100 km / h) in four and a half seconds. The electric machine has a 54 kWh battery and weighs 1,780 pounds (£ 3,924).
Just like all the other cars competing in the Extreme E, McLaren’s high-powered electric car is impressively wide, 2.3 meters (90.5 inches). To put this chapter into perspective, we a collection of the largest cars currently in production placed the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in number one, but it was still considerably narrower, 2.09 meters (82.6 inches) without side mirrors. Heck, it’s even wider than the Hummer H1 or Toyota Mega Cruiser.
The 2022 Extreme E Championships are scheduled to start on 19-20. February next year in Saudi Arabia, the first of five races, although the final calendar has not yet been announced.
