Hokies playoff in Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Wake Forest on Thursday afternoon and dropped the match in four sets 26-24, 15-25, 10-25, 15-25. Demon Deacons will move from a 13-11 year record to a 4-9 conference play. Virginia Tech drops 10-15 in the season.

The Hokies quickly jumped to the top in the first set, leveled the match 14-14 and took their biggest lead 20-17. From there, Demon Deacons equalized the match 24-24, but a kill Brie Postema and Cera Powell ended the lot with the Hokies 1-0 lead.

Griere Hughes came out firing in the first installment, recording four kills and 0.273 percent attack. The graduate student also added a solo block to finish his first set with the team’s highest five points. Marisa’s circle also played a stable first set, recording three kills and 0.222 percent attack, adding block assistance.

Defensively, Logan Mosley and Mary Page each had five wells to lead the Hoki. When starting the setter, Postema had nine assists in the first set as well as two kills in three attempts.

It was Wake Forest after the first set when Deacs jumped 5-0 to the lead in the second and third sets. The fourth set was a tougher battle as both teams exchanged points 9-9, with Wake going 6-0 to lead 15-9. Demon Deacons took the set and the match with a score of 25-15.

Hughes finished his match in double digits, recording 10 kills and 0.179 per cent. Cerchio and Powell each added six kills. Wake Forest overtook the Hokies by 0.328 percent attack rate compared to Tech’s 090. The Hokies recorded four blocks at night, compared to six Demon Deacons blocks.

Virginia Tech will return to operations on Sunday and meet Duke at Durham. The first serving is set at 1 p.m.
