The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League on Thursday banned Armstrong High School students from participating in their hockey games after a cheering crowd of about 50 to 60 people shouted vulgarity at the Mars Fightin ‘Planets women’s goalkeeper on Oct. 28, according to the Associated. Press (h / t ESPN).
“The game should have been suspended until the behavior ended or fans were taken out of the building,” PIHL commissioner John Mucha said, adding that the lists were “disgusting” and “far more than children are children.”
Armstrong principal Kirk Lorigan said last week that the school was “horrified and confused by the actions of its student department. Mike White from Pittsburgh Post-Gzette.
“I think everyone who is present with moral value should stop this immediately,” he added. “I’m disgusting about it. There were a lot of people out there who could have treated this differently.”
Mars coach Steve Meyers said the shouts got the goalkeeper in tears after the second set.
“We don’t have anyone else. He plays at the university and the JV for us,” he told AP. “We’ve had a lot of girls in this league before, and we’ve never heard of anything like that. With all the training our coaches require in safe sports and athleticism, this shouldn’t happen. If it fails so badly, it’s really disappointing.”
US Olympic hockey player Meghan Duggan offered his support to the young athlete:
Armstrong County commissioners extended the school’s ban on students in grades 7-8 alongside the PIHL ban, while high school leaders demanded the league provide two guards per game.
“It is clear that the incident on 28 October was completely unacceptable, and the entire hockey community must take action to ensure that similar activity never happens again,” the Mars club said in a statement. “We hope that the attention raised by this case will shed light on the problems faced by female athletes that should not be tolerated, and that this attention will help eliminate this type of behavior from our sport.”
