Burbank Girls Tennis fired Whitney 10-8

On an almost perfect day of playing tennis, when the weather wasn’t too hot or too cold, the Burbank High girls team went toe-to-to be visiting Whitney, and despite a hard effort, the Bulldogs failed and lost. 10-8 in the CIF Southern Section III semi-finals on Monday afternoon.

Even though their season is over, it will be remembered for a very long time and with immense pride.

A season ago, the Bulldogs finished fourth in the Pacific League and did not make it to the next season.

This season, Burbank finished the league campaign second with an 8-3 mark. This is not a small achievement.

The Wildcats are now 17-2 in all matches and have won 12 games.

The match started with each team scoring three points in the opening round, but the Wildcats were a little stronger from that point onwards.

The Bulldogs (11-4) arrived in the quarters after winning Walnut 12-6 in the opening round and then drilling La Salle 14-4 in the second round.

On the road to Whitney in the semifinals, the Wildcats defeated Millikan 11-7 in the first round and then Ventura 14-4 in the second round.

The season started for the Bulldogs with three consecutive wins, but then lost to a strong Arcadia 15-3.

Two victories followed, including a 13-5 win over Burroughs, but Apaches beat Burbank 15-3.

Two wins followed for the Bulldogs, which included a 14-4 blitz over rival Bears, but the annoying Apass won the Bulldog 15-3.

Burbank ended the regular season with two wins, including a 16-2 win over Burroughs.

After winning the first two games of the season, the Wildcats lost to Los Alamitos 12-6, but bounced back and took three consecutive wins before crashing Mater Deille 11-7. The next dozen matches were taken by Whitney.

Burbank’s No. 1 double team Brianna Kobrlasihi and Meeneh Mirzaians won 6-1, 4-6 and 6-1.

Elli Sumera and Nairi Zeytounzian are the Bulldogs in double tandem No. 2 and won 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3.

“I thought it was a really great way for me to end my high school year. Apparently in the first two years we only got one round via CIF, and last year was not the best season with COVID, ”said Sumera, who played his last match at the high school level. “But I’m really glad we got out and played with our hearts and got this far.”

Sumera liked the way this team never gave up. “I’m really proud of our team. We did a really great job this year and got really close,” he said. “I was just happy to have an enjoyable season in my older year and get out strongly.”

Sumera continued, “I am glad we have come this far. I was happy with nothing since last year, finishing fourth and not getting into the playoffs, he said. – The girls supported so much this year, and I was so lucky to have such an awesome team. I think I can speak for the whole team, we’re glad we got this far.

Also in Burbank’s 3rd Duo, Liliyan Hawrylo and Arpi Krikorian had a good afternoon after winning 6-4, 2-6 and 6-0.

The Bulldogs earned a point in the doubles as 3rd place Sena Hammel defeated Lauren Fong, Whitney’s third place, 7-6 (7-5).

“Our goal is always to never give up. The first batch was tied. The idea is to continue the fight despite everything, Whitney coach Dave Moorman said. “Keep the pressure off of you and play point by point. They’re fighting there. Our goal is to walk off the field and know we fought.”
