Historian suggests why Yorkshire cricket is a “demographic time bomb”

In his book, “Different Class: The Untold Story of English Cricket,” Dr. Stone argues that cricket shows that the uppercase and lowercase letters “hate meritocracy.”

Last week, Mark Arthur resigned as CEO of the crisis club in Yorkshire, succumbing to increasing pressure on a day when England captain Joe Root also joined the demands for a permanent change in the county.

As a result of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism, President Roger Hutton also resigned, frustratedly resigning from the club’s case and urging both Arthur and Cricket Director Martyn Moxon to do the same.

Rafiq has repeatedly lobbied for the couple to leave, and many high-ranking politicians have repeated these feelings recently.

Dr. Stone, whose book looks at recreational rather than first-class cricket, emphasizes that practitioners of English cricket have sought to reduce or exclude the participation of working classes and ethnic minorities for more than a century.

While there are still many forms of this, he said: “Cricket in the form of cups and leagues – so synonymous with the northern counties, especially Yorkshire – was banned in practice in London and the home counties for 50 years.

“Now free to choose who they played against; the middle class was able to create their own separate world of cricket.

“We still live with the consequences that contribute to the fact that if the face doesn’t fit into these clubs, it’s a problem, even in an era when leagues are being played again nationwide, they create unspoken obstacles.”

The book also explores the idea that the current structures of English cricket accidentally work against people who trust “municipal facilities”.

Dr. Stone said: “Councils cannot use assets to open doors, and if you have working-class cricketers, especially South Asian cricketers, their application to join the ECB’s mainstream leagues is often rejected on the grounds that their facilities are not good enough.

“This is apparently institutional racism, but they are hiding behind the idea that they want standards to be maintained.”
