IGLS, Austria – The United States won its first two World Cup medals in slides on Saturday and won gold and silver in the women’s monobob.
Elana Meyers Taylor and Kaillie Humphries were first and second in the United States, while Laura Nolte of Germany was third.
It was the third time since the start of the 2017-2018 season that American sleighs grabbed both gold and silver in the same World Championships or Monobob World Series. Other cases came last season in the women’s toboggan race in Igls and the monobob race in Konigssee, Germany, where Humphries won and Meyers Taylor was second on both occasions.
In a two-man race on Saturday, German Francesco Friedrich started the Olympic season with a new win. Friedrich is ranked second in his last 33 two-man World Championships. He has won gold 26 times and silver in the other seven.
Silver was driven by Johannes Lochner of Germany and Brad Hall of Britain was awarded bronze.
The best two-man sled in the United States was driven by Codie Bascue, who finished fifth with Carlo Valdes. Hunter Church and Kris Horn were ranked 20th in the United States
The first World Sleigh Ride Weekend of the season ends on Sunday with a four-man and women sled race.
