Johanna Konta announced that she would quit tennis at the age of 30 and said she had lived her childhood dreams on the field.
Konta did not say in a statement on social media why he had decided to retire, but the news comes after two years of injury campaigns and a coronary virus that forced him to miss Wimbledon and the Olympics as well as problems with palpitations.
The former British number one said: “My career as a player is over and I am so incredibly grateful for the career that came out of it. All the evidence showed that I can’t ‘get in’ to this profession.
“I’m so incredibly grateful for these people. You know who you are. Through my perseverance and the guidance of others, I got to live my dream. I had to become what I wanted and said as a child. How incredibly lucky I consider myself. How grateful I am.”
The account, which rose to fourth in the world rankings after reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2017, recently revealed that palpitations had come and gone in several years.
“I sometimes have a palpitation – basically my heart rate is picking up for no reason, I feel a little dizzy,” Konta told Tennis Actu TV. “The first time this happened was in Birmingham in 2017, the second time in Beijing in 2018, the third time three months ago when I did my training block with clay at my home in London.
“I wouldn’t say there is a massive common denominator, there have been stressful situations and stress-free situations.”
At the age of 14, Konta, who moved from Australia to the UK with her Hungarian parents, quits the club after achieving things that no British female player had been able to do for more than 30 years. He won four WTA championships and reached the semifinals in three different Grand Slam tournaments, including the Wimbledon Dream Run, which ended at the Center Court in the hands of Venus Williams.
He enjoyed a strong year in 2019 when he reached the semi-finals in three consecutive slams, but has since struggled with tendonitis of his knee, among other health problems, and dropped out of the top 100 in the world this year. US Open winner Emma Raducanu has since taken the diaper as Britain’s number one.
