Gervonta Davis maintains WBA Lightweight Championship victory unanimously over Isaac Cruz on Sunday | Boxing news

Gervonta Davis fought past Isaac Cruz on Sunday night in Los Angeles to maintain the WBA Lightweight Championship in a thriving lightweight league.

“Tank” won the unanimous decision to remain the undefeated three-weight world champion as the division rose.

Vasiliy Lomachenko will return on Saturday as a live broadcast from Sky Sports against Richard Commey, while Devin Haney retained his WBC belt on Saturday, a week after George Kambosos Jr. shocked Teofimo Lopez to rise to number one.

Ryan Garcia, another unbeaten U.S. star, reacted to Davis ’latest victory:” Gervonta gets rid of the fighting C-level fighters, he’s the weakest of all the lightweight! His hardest test was Leo Santa Cruz, he almost lost tonight. That’s it. I’ve called you already some time.”

Davis said after the win, “All those guys are easy jobs. I’m a top dog.”

He was forced to scrap harder than expected to remain undefeated from his opponent in the game, Cruz.

Davis was not allowed to breathe for a moment during the entire fight in the middle of the pressure attack.

Eventually, Davis was able to schedule his trademark punches, but later said the injured hand prevented him from stopping Cruz during the trip.

The judges’ scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113.

Davis is now invincible in 26 with 24 knockouts – he had stopped his previous 16 opponents.

He owns the WBA’s “regular” belt, while 24 hours earlier Devin Haney retained a version of the WBC title.

George Kambosos Jr. is recognized as number one in the division. He defeated Teofimo Lopez a week ago to get gold from all the governing bodies.

Lopez had shocked Vasili Lomachenko last year, who has since recovered viciously with a break victory.

Lomachenko returns to the ring on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports against Richard Commey.

“That’s my goal in boxing now,” he said. “Undisputed world champion, this is my motivation.”

The division, led by four young unbeaten Americans – Lopez, Davis, Haney and Garcia – was shocked by Australian Kambosos Jr. last week, and now Lomachenko has a chance to bet his claim that he is still a champion.
