7/11 Texas men’s basketball drops to 64-60 at number 23/25 in Seton Hall

NEWARK, NJ – Seniors Tre Mitchell and Timmy Allen both recorded double doubles, but No. 7/11 Texas (6-2) dropped a tough 64-60 race No. 23/25 at Seton Hall (8-1) on Thursday night at the Prudential Center. The competition was part of the Big 12-BIG EAST Challenge.

Both of Texas ’losses this season have come in real road games against AP’s Top 25 opponents. Longhorns previously lost 1st place in Gonzaga on November 13th.

Mitchell set a game record and a season record of 19 points when he changed 9/17 goals and grabbed the best 11 rebounds of the season with two blocks and two assists in 35 minutes. Allen scored 17 points as he scored eight goals out of 15 and grabbed the top 12 of the season in 33 minutes. Senior Marcus Carr also scored a double-digit score by 10 points and added three innings without a change in 36 minutes.

Seton Hall used an early 10-0 spurt to build a 14-6 lead after a three-pointer to Myles Cale at 13:33. Remaining 18-12 after Tyrese Samuel’s dunk 11:22 left, Longhorns went 16-5 in the run over the next five minutes to grab a 28-23 cushion after Allen’s layup at the 6:39 mark.

Texas held the lead until the Pirates scored the last five points of the halftime in the final 46 seconds, including Alexis Yetna’s three-pointer with three seconds left. Longhorns moved 55.6 percent off the field (15-27) and went 7-7 from the free throw line in the first half. Mitchell scored 13 points when he scored a 6/9 field goal in the 20th minute.

UT started the second half with a 7-2 run and took a 44-39 lead after Carr’s ranking at 17:56. The Pirates responded with an 11-2 spurt over the next four and a half minutes to build a 50-46 pad after Jared Rhoden’s jumper with 13:17 left. Mitchell-dunk leveled the game 50-50 with 11:24.

The race turned into a defensive battle in the final 10 minutes, with Texas taking their final lead in the 56-54 Allen layup with 8:12 left. Rhoden responded with a setback and a jump, giving Pirates a 58-56 lead at 5:29. Both teams remained undefeated for nearly the next four minutes before Samuel’s free throws expanded to Seton Hall’s pillow readings at 59-56 at 1:39.

UT cut a margin of 59-58 in the Allen layup with 52 seconds left, but the Pirates responded with a three-pointer from Bryce Aiken, building a 62-58 lead with 33 seconds left. The second Allen move closes the gap to 62-60 with 24 seconds left. Aiken seals the Pirates victory by hitting a couple of free throws with 14 seconds left.

Texas will return to operations when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday, December 14th. The tip is scheduled for 8pm at the Central Frank Erwin Center, and ESPNU will televise the game nationally.
