It has been an open secret in the world of cricket Kohl’s days as India’s limited captain were numbered after the turbulent T20 World Cup campaign.

There have been tensions between Indian cricket officials and Kohl after he refused to resign as captain after a devastating tournament, but BCCI’s decision to elect Rohit Sharma as their new skipper was not well communicated.

Kohli heard that he was ousted from the ODI captain after seeing the announcement on social media.

BCCI described the transfer as a “fait accompli” after Kohli refused to resign as captain on his own terms.

However, the ruthlessness of the announcement rubbed many Indian fans in the wrong direction, as the BCCI did not even refer to Kohl by name when announcing Sharman to take over the post.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to appoint Rohit Sharman as captain of the ODI and T20I teams in the future,” reads the last line of their latest ODI team bulletin.

Wisden columnist Rohit Sankar said the result was disappointing for Indian cricket fans and national team politics played a key role.

“What is disappointing, more than the way the news was published, is that this power struggle and the ambiguity of the government has prevented Indian fans from basking in a truly magnificent era,” Sankar wrote.

“At the same time, we should celebrate the two unmistakable greatness of the game, we’re discussing which side they’re on, and politics, not cricket.”

Many expected Kohli, who will remain the captain of the test, to lead India to win 50 World Championships domestically in 2023, but the board has chosen one white ball captain.

Under Kohl’s leadership, India reached the semi-finals of the 50-year-old World Cup in 2019, but did not get beyond the group stage in this year’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

As a further indication of Rohit’s growing position on the team, the 34-year-old also replaced another Mumbai player, Ajinkya Rahanen, as the team’s vice captain.

CA near the lock to the fifth test location

Cricket Australia (CA) could lock in a place for the fifth men’s Ashes Test as early as Friday, with Hobart still in the lead.

The finals of the series were due to start in Perth on 14 January.

However, the CA has had to relocate the final test elsewhere due to border restrictions in Western Australia.

Each state and ACT have expressed an interest in hosting the match, and MCG and SCG are Bellerive’s toughest races.

CA CEO Nick Hockley spoke on Thursday when asked about the possibility of hosting his first test after 2016.

But Hockley confirmed that the test decision, now set as a pink ball match, will be made “in the not too distant future”.

“We’ve had a lot of interest. I’m not going into details because we’re just working through the details now,” Hockley told SEN.

Western Australian Police Minister Paul Papalia accused CA of “completely inflexible” and “rather poor organization” after discussions on the fifth test hit a brick wall.

Hockley claimed the criticism was “completely unfair.”

“We’ve been working really constructively with governments across the country, all for the last 18 months,” he said.

“Including the Government of Western Australia.

“So this really doesn’t reflect the conversations and the spirit of the conversations I’ve had.”
