The long ordeal of Canada’s young women’s field hockey team has come to an end when the team is quarantined in a hotel in the Toronto area after freezing in South Africa over restrictions imposed on a variant of the omicron coronavirus.
The women arrived home on Thursday after more than a week of uncertainty.
“It’s actually such a relief to finally get back home to Canadian soil,” said Jenna Berger, one of two members of the Waterloo team. “I finally got a hug from your parents after everything you experienced because it was extremely difficult, emotionally and mentally for all of us athletes.”
The team arrived at the Potchestroom, about 120 miles southwest of Johannesburg, in late November to play at the Junior World Championships starting on December 5th.
But the incident was canceled because travel restrictions around the omicron conversion were lifted – and there was no immediate flight home from the team.
Canadians traveling from South Africa are required to have a pre-departure COVID-19 test result from a third country before they can continue home. After receiving a travel exemption from the Canadian government, the team was able to leave Johannesburg on Wednesday and move through Frankfurt to Germany before arriving in Toronto.
Berger said players are now isolated in the hotel until they get the results of their COVID test.
If the test is positive, the player will be quarantined at the hotel. Otherwise, they will be quarantined.

‘It was unbelievable’
In recent days, parents and supporters have pulled together to bring players home.
“I think all the families have contacted their MP,” said Liz Berger, Jenna’s mother. “I think we’ve all got emails or phone calls saying they’re going to support us, they’re going to see what they can do for us.”
Jenna said she was most impressed by the calls and letters of support from ordinary Canadians.
“It was amazing,” he said. “We’re really grateful.”
