Lady Lions will be hosting the state of Youngstown on Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s basketball team will continue the out-of-conference game by hosting Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center. Tipoff is set at 2pm with a broadcast on B1G +.

Headed by Lady Lions Carolyn Kieger, are 5-5 this season and won 52-48 with their first Big Ten win of the Rutgers season.

All non-football events at Penn State Athletics require a valid license or payment of a campus parking fee. Free parking is no longer granted to season ticket holders.

Fans with a valid Penn State University Park parking permit are allowed to park for free at non-football events in accordance with Transportation Services parking rules and access.

MARISA’S STRONG JUNIOR CAMPAIGN

• Junior Makenna Marisa scored at least 11 points in all 10 games this season and has 20+ points in six games.
• He had 20 points vs. Rider (Nov. 11), 30 vs. Delaware State (Nov. 16), 29 vs. Clemson (Nov. 21), 25 vs. St. John’s (Nov. 26), 23 vs. Kent State (Nov. 28), and 21.11 in Indiana (6.12.).
• Makenna Marisa ranks second in Big Ten points (20.8 ppg), good 12th in the country. With 21.3 points per game, he ranks third among Power Five guards and fifth among Power Five players.
• He is also second in the conference and sixth in the country in total points (208). Marisa’s fourth in national goals (80).
• Marisa is also fifth in the Big Ten series in assists per game (5.0), ranking 42nd in the country, and third in total assists (50), ranking 17th in the country. He is also eighth in the conference and throws an average of 2.20 three-point points per match.
• He is one of four DI players to make an average of 20+ points and 5+ assists this season.
• Marisa was selected to play Co-Big Ten of the Week on November 22nd. It was the first weekly Big Ten award in Marisa’s career.
• He recorded a triple doubling in Penn State’s win of 120-51 from Delaware State on Nov. 16. He scored 30 points, fired 12/16, gave 11 assists and 10 assists against Hornets. His points, assists and assists were all career highs.
• Marisa’s triple double was Penn Statelle’s first since Suzie McConnell’s January 3, 1988 (22 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists in a 74-63 win over Western Kentucky).
• Marisa’s triple double is the 25th point-feed-stocks-triangle-double and 20.30-point triple-double in NCAA Division I history.
• It is also the third triple double in the history of Big Ten and the second triple double in the entry points.
• Marisa was the 79th Penn State 30-point game and became the first two-figure Lady Lion to play after Dara Taylor (10 vs. Minnesota, 2014).

LADY LIONS PLACES AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS

• Penn State ranks 48th in the country and fourth in the conference, giving an average of 16.3 assists per match and 15th in the country’s total assists (163). The Lady Lions have scored at least 20 assists in four matches this season.
• Penn State is fifth in three-point goals in Big Ten (71).
• The PSU ranks second in the Big Ten series in passes per game (10.4) and total passes (103).

BRIGHAM TO MANAGE PAINT

• For the second year ahead Ali Brigham made a big impression in her first game as Lady Lion, vs. LIU, after moving from George Washington. He scored 20 points and nine rebounds and three blocks. He followed it with a 23-point lead against Rider and fired off the floor 11/13.
• Brigham became the first Lady Lion to score 20+ points in the first two games of the season since 2015 by Brianna Banks.
• He collected his first double of his career against St. Johns with 19 points, 8/12 shots and 10 rebounds.
• He scored 10 points against 13. Iowa and the team’s highest 18 points at Boston College.
• Brigham scored 13 points on the exchange bench against Rutgers.
• Brigham finished sixth in ten games (56.4), eighth in goals (57) and 13th block per game (1.0) in Big Ten in ten games.

THE REBELLION DOES EVERYTHING

• Freshman Leilani Kapinus is constantly filling the box points this season.
• He has 16 assists, three in each race against Rider, Kent State and Boston College, and is third among Power Five freshmen.
• He averages 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per competition and led the team in rebounds in three games.
• He scored 10 points in the fourth quarter in Penn State’s 80-75 victory over St. John’s.
• The freshman has made 15 assists during the year, three in each match against Rider, Boston College and Indiana.
• The Wisconsin descent has eight blocks, at least one of seven different games, and two blocks in Boston College.

MANY FACTORS

• Penn State has five players averaging at least 5.9 points this season. He leads Marisa by 20.8 points.
• Ali Brigham is averaging 12.5 points per race and reached the 20 – point mark against LIU (20) and Rider (23). It’s Beverley makes 7.9 points per game, including a 20-point attempt against Rider.
• Anna Camden and Shay Hagans receive an average of 5.9 points per competition.
• Penn State has also balanced its minutes with 10 players playing an average of at least 10.7 minutes per match.

STRENGTH OF BIG TEN

• There are five Big Ten teams in the December 6 AP survey: 8th Maryland, 10th Indiana, 12th Iowa, 13th Michigan and 20th Ohio State. Purdue is among the teams that received votes.
• Penn State opened the Big Ten game in Indiana on Dec. 6.
• The Lady Lions played 10 ranked opponents in the 2020-21 season, the most among the Big Ten schools, winning 69-67 Ohio State No. 15 on February 24, 2021.
