Sri Lanka Cricket will appoint Mahela Jayawardene as national team consultant coach

Colombo: Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene will be the national team consultant coach from next year, the country’s cricket board announced on Monday.

The Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) Executive Committee appointed Jayawardene to its most recent role after consulting with the Government’s Technical Advisory Committee.

In his new role, which will run for one year, Mumbai Indians coach Jayawardene will be responsible for general cricket affairs for national teams and provide strategic support to High-Performance Center players and management teams.

“We are very pleased that Mahela will join the national team in an expanded role, especially given that Sri Lanka will have a heavy international calendar in 2022,” said Ashley de Silva, CEO of SLC.

“Mahela’s contribution to the first round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup became invaluable to our team’s overall performance in the finished event,” de Silva added.

Despite the new appointment, Jayawardene will continue in his role on the under-19 team as he prepares for next year’s ICC U-19 World Championships in the West Indies.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work with national cricketers and coaches in our various development teams, including the U19 and A teams, to help us do justice to Sri Lanka’s tremendous cricket talent and potential,” Jayawardene said.

“I am very passionate about Sri Lankan cricket and I believe that with coordinated and focused teamwork, a holistic approach across all ages, we can achieve continued success in the future,” he added.

He said his main role will be to support the national team coach and support staff in coaching and strategic thinking over the coming year.
