Former Australian test cricket player Michael Slater sent more than 60 text messages to the former in an alleged shocking AVO violation, the court has heard.
Former Australian test cricket player Michael Slater sent flooded messages and calls to his former partner during hours, allegedly violating a restraining order, the court has heard.
The former probationer arrived in Manly local court on Wednesday, hearing he allegedly sent 66 text messages and made 18 calls to his former partner in about two and a half hours on Tuesday night.
Police arrested the 51-year-old man on Wednesday at about 7:45 a.m. after investigating the alleged violation on the West Promenade in Manly.
Slater was taken to Manly Police Station, where he was charged with violating the AVO ban / restriction, using the transportation service to threaten / harass / violate, and violating warranties.
AVO has been in business since November 19 and followed previous allegations that he used a cell phone to threaten, harass or insult his ex.
Slater’s attorney, James McLoughlin, told the court that the behavior was largely due to a recurrence of the alcohol disorder.
Asking the court to grant his client bail, McLoughlin said Slater had been assigned a bed in the Northern Beaches mental health unit but it would not be available on Wednesday.
Opposing his bail, the prosecutor claimed Slater’s former partner had “fears” and referred to AVO’s short period.
The police prosecutor described the messages sent to the woman as “disturbing and highly offensive in nature”.
Judge Michelle Goodwin agreed to grant bail to Slater on the condition that she live with her sister under effective house arrest and not leave until the hospital bed was available to her.
He said it was in the best interest of the community and Slater himself that he get treatment.
He also forbade Slater not to use or hold the cell phone against warranties.
“He (shouldn’t) have the illusion that if he breaks bail, he’s back in prison,” Judge Goodwin said.
Judge Goodwin acknowledged that Slater had a very limited criminal record.
Slater played 74 tests and 42 one-day international competitions in Australia from 1993 to 2001 before moving on to comment.
He was ousted from Channel 7 cricket broadcasts in October after Prime Minister Scott Morrison was criticized in tweets in the Maldives after the Indian Premier League was suspended in May.
He will return to Waverley Local Court on December 23rd.
