Field Hockey 2021 Review

Undoubtedly, the fall 2021 Rutgers field hockey season was legendary. A sleeping giant built under the direction of a head coach Citizen Meredith really rushed to the national stage in his 10th^th season with a historic campaign.

At the start of the season, Rutgers had a program record of 15 and the most wins under the leadership of head coach. Citizen Meredith had been 13. In 2021, RU broke that record and ended the season 19-4. Rutgers won this season No. 12 Duke, No. 6 UConn, vs. 16 Syracuse, vs. 20 Monmouth, No. 22 Delaware, No. 3 Northwestern, No. 17 Princeton, at. An incredible moment of the season full of them, Rutgers won three games in four days at home to raise the Big Ten Tournament Award. RU won Indiana, No. 7 Penn Staten and then No. 2 Michigan in a row to earn the first-ever Big Ten Tournament title in any Rutgers sports program. Kerrie Burns and Gianna Glatz was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team for a defensively led performance. Kerrie Burns was named MVP of the Big Ten. After winning the Big Ten, the Scarlet Knights gathered Sunday night to watch the NCAA Selection Show. When the series was unveiled, RU was shown as the general seed of the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program’s history. Glatz earns the third All-American recognition of his career and marks the second time in a row that he was named an All-American First Team. He was one of the first two team goalkeepers. He is the first player in Rutgers history to be named twice to First Team All-American and the first triple to All-American RU after Andschana Mendes in 1999-2001. Larmour earned All-American recognition for the second year in a row after being selected as the first All-American team last season. It marked the third consecutive season when RU had several All-Americans. Prior to 2019, there had not been several Scarlet Knights as All-Americans during the same period since 1986.

Thanks to the additional eligibility of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Scarlet Knights brought back a large number of influential parents for the fifth year on “On the Banks.” Because there are so many older participants this season, the program had to hold two separate senior days.

“Super Seniors”: Kerrie Burns, Gianna Glatz, Katie Larmour, Gianna Mancini, Kassidy Shetler

An extremely talented group, this group included a trio of perennial captains and leaders at Burns, Glatz and Larmour, as well as long-time beginners. Gianna Mancini and Kassidy Shetler.

Glatz, the best goalkeeper in the country, scored the best of the statistics with 0.93 goals against the average and 0.796 percent off.

Larmour scored one goal and added five assists in his sixth year of play on “On the Banks.”

Burns opened RU’s defense and added four goals and three assists in two defensive fights.

Mancini started 19 matches and finished fourth in the team with five goals and 11 points. Shetler started 18 games with three goals.

An impressive group where four players see the time as a multi-year starter. The group included two selections for the entire region this season.

Redlingshoefer led the team in goals (eight), assists (12) and points (28). Romano started each game as a central defender, while Parkes was fourth for the team with five goals and 11 points.

While RU boasted a hugely impressive senior class, the program brings back a lot of talented lower class.

RU got a big bet from the freshman trio who made it into the opening lineup. Lucy Bannatyne equal to the team lead with eight goals, Iris Langejans started all 23 matches behind and Guillermina Causuarano made 21 starts in midfield. Each of them earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award of the week.

Second year student Bridy Molyneaux was third on the team with six goals, five of which came in the final seven games of the season.

Junior Rachel Houston started all 23 matches as an attacker with three goals and three assists.

Amanda Beck (20 games played), Carly Snarski (20 games, two starts, two goals), Maggie Lamb (21 games played, two starts) and Isabella Mancini (12 games, two starts) were all valuable role players for the team, which contributed to the team’s success.

Sofia Howard started the first two games of the season in the finish line and played a total of five matches in two matches. Noelle Leaf played four games as a real freshman, while the other players took redshirt seasons.

The Scarlet Knights have a good chance of keeping a positive pace from this historic season and have a good chance of future success.
