BARCELONA: Andrei Rublev’s fifth-place COVID-19 test is positive, he confirmed on Monday. The Russian is the fifth player to get the virus positive after playing at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi this month.
Previously, Rafael Nadal and his coach Carlos Moya as well as Denis Shapovalov, Olympic tennis champion Belinda Bencic and Tunisian Ons Jabeur have received a positive COVID-19 test after attending an exhibition event in the United Arab Emirates.
“I am currently in Barcelona and unfortunately a positive COVID-19 test. I am isolated and follow all protocols under medical supervision. As you know, I am fully vaccinated and preparing for the tournaments – the ATP Cup and the Australian Open. Now I have to recover and only go to Melbourne when it’s safe for everyone, ”he wrote on Twitter.
Rublev, who is currently in Barcelona, is isolated with little symptoms. The 24-year-old was scheduled to play in the ATP Cup in Russia from 1 January. The first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, will start on January 17 in Melbourne.
