Chennai:

Tokyo 2020, which had to be delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the veteran’s last chance to win an Olympic medal. Sharath has two cracks in it as she competes in both the men’s singles and mixed doubles events. A few days before the trip to the Japanese capital, World No.32 Sharath spoke to DT Next about his preparations, opportunities at the Olympics and more.

EXTRACTS

How good preparations have led to the Tokyo Olympics?

I had a schedule so I could give my best at both events. For mixed couples, Manika Batra and I practiced with quite a few sparring partners at Sonepat National Camp. As for singles, I’ve been active since I got to the Olympics in March. In fact, I started preparations as early as September 2020. I knew I would qualify; qualifications were never an issue. Given last year’s COVID-19 situation and the challenges it posed, I knew I had to start my work earlier.

Could you give us an idea of how you fine-tuned your singles?

I had four or five players as sparring partners for my singles. I played them alternately. I was constantly changing my sparring partner because I needed variation. I felt like I needed a bunch of players to help me improve my game. Some players are offensive, while others defend well. So I took the positive side of their game and kept working.

What do you think of your chances in men’s singles?

In the doubles, this is my highest place at No. 32 going to the Olympics. I have never been in this position before. In terms of fitness, I’m fine. I’m pretty sure Tokyo 2020 is my best Olympics in terms of both performance and results.

You combine with Manika Batra in a mixed doubles game with a draw of only 16 teams. Is it possible to gallop a medal in that case?

It is very possible because the greatest opportunity is there. We have high hopes for that. If we win three matches, we will return with a medal. Asia is the powerhouse of table tennis. After winning a bronze medal for the mixed batteries event at Indonesia’s 2018 Asian Games, we found that we were able to reach the podium at the Olympics. Faith always existed, but the dream did not become a reality until 2018. We have been in good shape and it gives us more self-confidence.

Tokyo 2020 is your fourth Olympics. Do you think your previous experience in games is useful in challenging conditions?

The COVID-19 situation is something new. I had to make a list of things before the flight to Tokyo. So concentration is not entirely a sport. Safety must be taken care of. Overall, I will continue to try to figure out how to go about the whole process. But when the Olympics start, I’m in my area. My legal experience helps me deal with pressure.

You have recently turned 39 and are at the peak of your career. How supportive has your family been on this journey?

I have been able to continue my passion for so long just because of the support of my family. I have to thank my wife. Only because of him can I go out and do what I want to do best despite things at once.
