Antonio Conte says “the door is always open” for Christian Eriksen in Tottenham as the Dane speeds up his unlikely return after a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen revealed this week that he “died for five minutes” when he crashed in a Euro 2020 group match against Finland in June.

The 29-year-old received life-saving treatment in the field before being taken to hospital and was fitted with an implantable cardiovascular defibrillator (ICD).

Eriksen had a cardiac arrest in the match between Denmark and Finland at the European Championships last summer.

He left Inter Milan by mutual agreement before Christmas after Italian rules prevented him from playing at the ICD, and he is now training with FC Chiasson, a third-level Swiss club, to improve his fitness.

The former Spurs man, who is aiming for a spot on the Danish team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was recruited with Inter in 2020, and although the couple hasn’t spoken recently, Conte says he’s welcome to Spurs.

“I didn’t talk to Christian recently. It was definitely great to see him on the field, to see him kick the ball,” Conte said.

– We’re talking about a really important player. But especially a top man.

– What happened this summer was not good, not good for the people who worked with him and the people who know him. I was scared at the moment.

“And now seeing him ready to play football again is great news. I think for Christian the door is always open.

Eriksen, who played more than 300 times in the Spurs and played a pivotal role in their rise to the top of English football, is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the elite level.

In an interview with the Danish broadcaster DR1, he said his heart “was not an obstacle”.

“My goal is to play at the World Cup in Qatar,” Eriksen said. ‘I want to play. That has been my idea all along.

‘That is the goal, the dream. Whether to be elected is another matter. But my dream is to come back.

“I’m sure I can come back because I don’t feel … I don’t feel different.” Physically, I’m in top shape again.

– That has been my goal and there is still a little time for that, so until then I am just going to play football and prove that I am back on the same level.

– My dream is to rejoin the national team and play in Parken again and prove that it was a one-time game and that it will not be repeated.

– I want to prove that I have made progress and that I can play for the national team again.

– Again, it is up to the Manager to assess my level. But my heart is not an obstacle.
