Canada’s best hockey players won’t make it to the Olympics

ITHIS TRACK things in Canada. It is an official winter sport and a national pastime. Canada has won more Olympic medals than any other country. A full half of Canadians tuned in to see how their team won gold in the men’s hockey final at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, making it the most watched television show in the country’s history.

But the chances of the Canadian team winning the Beijing Games starting on February 4 look bleak. Similarly, the United States, another resource for sport, seems unlikely to win gold, even though the two countries host the National Hockey League (NHL), with 32 teams of the world’s best players fighting every week. This year, league bosses have banned players from competing in China.

The NHL blame the disorder caused by covid-19. The pandemic has indeed meant that the league has postponed more than 100 games this season, which began in October. Before Christmas, more than 15% of players (or 119 people) were out of the count due to the virus.

However, some fans cry badly. The league also withdrew in 2018 after a dispute with the International Olympic Committee (COPD) on who pays for players ’travel, accommodation and insurance. The NHL loses money by borrowing its players, so it has little incentive to do so. It also can’t use video games in its ads.

In 2020, the players negotiated to enter the Olympics as part of a collective agreement with the league. But even before the Omicron variant, few thought NHL would stick to his word. “I think they would have looked high and low as an excuse not to send them,” says Ryan Lambert, a hockey writer.

Canada and the United States now have just a few weeks to assemble teams from junior series and college players. The Russian men who won the gold medal in 2018 will almost certainly do it again (albeit under the Olympic flag, not because of their own doping ban). The Chinese team, which was eliminated for the first time this year and faced a possible humiliation on the skates of Canada and the United States, could save the Reds.

The league bets that fans will care more about the teams in their hometown. Previous Olympic honors have not been translated for classification pitfalls NHL. Cliff Grevler of Boston Consulting Group said its decision to skip previous games did little to hamper the league’s popularity in North America. Gary Bettman, NHLCommissioner has proposed that hockey be moved to the summer games, during the league break, but COPD put his idea on ice.

The NHL it may seem like it is gaining a broader sense in Canada. The Canadian government has been one of the loudest supporters of the diplomatic boycott of the Olympics. The latest Pew global attitude survey from 2020 showed that 73 percent of Canadians had a frosty view of China, a historic high.
