Classroom storage no longer means just pens and paper enough.
In Oakland County, Michigan, a teacher has given alarming but potentially necessary advice to her teachers on a more skillful way to fight an active shooter in the classroom.
His worst case proposal spread in TikTok 2.1 million views as other users discussed the plight of American schools.
On January 3, Carly Zacharias, a Spanish teacher in the Berkley school district, shared a video created with the help of her students.
“Hey teachers! So if you’re just like me, you’ve probably been thinking a lot about school safety lately,” he began. “I just had an idea – steal it freely.”
Upon entering his classroom, he points to an opposite wall lined with windows.
“I have these big windows in my back wall. My kids know that Plan A is always just to get out the middle window and run across the street,” he explained.
“But of course Plan B is a barricade door and a struggle, you all know this,” he says, referring to his colleagues in academia.
He points out that the lockable wooden door in his class also has a large glass window through which an intruder can easily enter.
“So I thought: What can I give each student just something to prepare for?”
Enter: hockey puck. Zacharias raises the puck to his camera as he describes why they make it completely child-friendly and intimidating. “It can really hurt you, especially 30,” he said, referring to what would happen if 30 adjustment discs – 6 ounces of solid rubber each – were thrown per shooter at a time.
He has already adopted the protocol in his classroom. Noticing that the new desk accessory was distracting some students, he also recommended taping the puck to the bottom of his desk “so kids can use it when needed.”
“Obviously it’s just a deterrent, but it makes us feel a little better,” he concluded.
The clever but deeply depressing classroom hacking mostly met with complaints from those who commented on the clip.
“America is a third world country with a Gucci belt,” wrote one critic with whom nearly 64,000 others agreed.
“The way you said‘ you all know how it is ’scares me,” another said. “In Europe, I’ve never had a way to defend myself in school.”
And more than 52,000 supported one comment that pointed to other injustices in public education: “Teachers are using their own money to have students thrown at shooters. Everything is fine.” It is indeed true that many teachers are forced to spend their personal financial resources on purchasing class supplies – but their shopping list has never had defense weapons until recently.
Active shooting exercises are now in general training over 95% Schools in the United States, although some criticize the measure as unnecessarily traumatic for children. Some schools have even used weapons loaded with blanks or pellets to prepare children for attack.
In 2020, anti-gun group Everytown – formed after a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut – observed a 42% increase in feelings of anxiety and stress and a 39% increase in depression among those who had recently practiced at their school.
“Surprisingly, I’ve seen more kids in my office after shutdown and shooting exercises than in a shooting range in Columbine or Parkland,” New York child psychologist Joy Levinson said in an interview with The Post in 2018.
He added: “The focus should be on how adults can prevent a shooter from entering a building.”
