Manchester United: Jose Mourinho’s award to Scott McTominay was a candlestick

Jose Mourinho’s last-minute decision to come up with his own award at Manchester United’s glittering 2018 closing ceremony, when Scott McTominay held out a candlestick to take home, is strangely revealed.

Goalkeeper David de Gea was named Sir Matt Busby’s Player of the Year Gong recipient in the evening, but as the event drew to a close, United’s then manager rose to share another accolade.

His decision surprised some at the club, and it has since come to the point that the desperate rush to find a silverware for McTominay resulted in him being given a certain piece of jewelry instead.

TalkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein, who was working with MUTV at the time, admitted that Mourinho’s intentions only survived mid-night.

He said: “When I was hosting the Man United Player of the Year award for MUTV and he was the manager, we did a live show in the studio when the awards were handed out.

“You’ve received swamp standard prizes, like the Matt Busby Prize, Player of the Year, but we learned that night that Jose wanted to come up with his own prize and give the prize.

“I don’t mean the awards ceremony in the afternoon, I mean in the evening.

– The evening started at 8 pm, and at about 9.30 pm we found out that Jose wanted to share the prize. Maybe it was earlier, but it was mid-night.

It was the Jose Mourinho Player of the Season Award that Scott McTominay won.

“But with the prize, you need the prize.

It has been revealed that Mourinho decided to present his own prize to his star in the middle of the night

So they ended up giving Scott McTominay a candlestick. It was long, silver and had a small bend – that was all they could find.

“I don’t know if Scott McTominay knows he won the candlestick.”

McTominay performed regularly during Mourinho’s reign, and he has remained a similar part under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.
