Tennis Nick Kyrgios was not named to the Australian Davis Cup team

Team captain Lleyton Hewitt has instead chosen a debutant Luke Saville, Thanasi Kokkinakisthe world’s 12th doubles expert John PeersAustralia ‘s number one Alex De Minaur and world 65 Alexei Popyrin March 4-5. to a draw in Sydney.

Kokkinakis and Kyrgios won the men’s doubles championship at the Australian Open last week and earned their first grand slam title.

But Hewitt is confident that his team will have enough firepower to match the Hungarians who lead the world 39. Marton Fucsovics.

“Alex has achieved most of his recent success in Sydney, beating the Sydney national team a few years ago, but also some of his best results last month, including quality wins against (Matteo) Berrettin and (Ugo) Humbert,” Hewitt said.

“Thanas had a fantastic Australian summer. He reaffirmed himself in the top 100, won his first championship at home in Adelaide and won quality players. And then winning the Australian Open doubles this gives him a lot of confidence in this draw.

“Popyrin had a chance to play in the final of the big Davis Cup match last year. He has a lot of firepower, including a lot of weapons and certainly an option for doubles or fours.

“John Peers has been a regular on the Davis Cup for several years, being among the top 15 doubles players, who won the Sydney Tennis Classic a couple of weeks ago and played exceptionally well with Luke Saville in the ATP Cup last month.

“And Luke gets his first chance to represent Australia in the Davis Cup. He has worked extremely hard for that, and I couldn’t be more proud of him for getting that opportunity and being able to introduce him to the golden jacket and his number,” Hewitt added.

De Minaur, the country’s best men’s player, is once again leading the Australian attack.

“It’s always an honor to put green and gold on,” 22-year-old de Minaur said.

“I can’t wait to get back to Ken Rosewall Arena, where I played my best tennis this summer and get to play in front of a home crowd.”

The upcoming draw for Kokkinakis, 25, is the first since 2015 and his Fifth Davis Cup nomination.

“I’m obviously excited to get an invitation from Lleyton. It’s been a long time since I’ve played the Davis Cup,” Kokkinakis said.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling to wear those colors and play in Australia. That atmosphere is second to none, it’s a great reward for the summer I’ve had, for me and my team, and for all the hard work I’ve done.”

Saville, 28, will become Australia’s 113th Davis Cup player.

“Playing the Davis Cup in Australia for putting green and gold has always been my childhood dream,” Saville said.

“It’s absolutely amazing to have this opportunity to represent my country at home.”

Hungary has designated Fucsovics, Zsombor Red, Fabian Marozsan, Kaveri Valkusz and Peter Fajta on his team. They are led by Captain Zoltan Nagy.

The nations last faced the Davis Cup final in the round Robin stage on a hard field in Turin, Italy last November, when the Australians finished 2-1.
