Wolverines Receive Seeds for NCAAs; Suriano, Amine Earn No. 1 Seeds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Graduate students Nick Suriano and Myles Amine earned No. 1 seeds at 125 and 184 pounds, respectively, as the Big Ten Conference Champion University of Michigan wrestling program’s nine NCAA Qualifiers learned their seeds for the NCAA Championships on Wednesday evening (March 10) when the full tournament brackets were released.

Suriano, a 2019 NCAA Champion at 133 pounds, owns a perfect 11-0 record on the season with 10 bonus wins. He captured the 125-pound Big Ten Conference title last weekend with a 12-4 major decision over Wisconsin’s Eric Barnett in the Championship bout. A two-time All-American who previously took runner-up honors at 125 pounds in 2018, Suriano will face the Winner of the pigtail between Stanford’s Logan Ashton and Virginia’s Patrick McCormick in the first round.

Amine enters the NCAA Championships as a No. 1 seed for the second straight season. Already a four-time All-American, Amine has never placed lower than fourth at the NCAA Championship, and he took third at 197 pounds last season. He captured his second straight Big Ten title last weekend, rallying to defeat Penn State’s then-no. 1 Aaron Brooks 6-4 in overtime in the Championship and all but clinch in the Wolverines’ team title. He is 17-1 on the season. Amine will wrestle the Winner of the pigtail between Northwestern’s Jack Jessen and Kent State’s Colin McCracken in the first round.

Graduate student Logan Massa earned the No. 3 seed at 174 pounds after taking runner-up honors at the Big Ten Championships, where he fell to Penn State’s No. 3 1 Carter Starocci, 5-1, in the final. The mass is 16-2 on the season and is a two-time NCAA All-American. He placed fifth last season at 174 pounds. He will face Binghamton’s Jacob Nolan in the first round.

Graduate student Patrick Brucki is the No. 4 seed at 197 pounds following a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, which included a pair of wins over Iowa’s then-fourth-ranked Jacob Warner. Brucki, who placed fourth at the 2019 NCAA Championships and earned the NWCA first team All-America honors during the COVID season, is 20-6 this season and will open up against Cleveland State’s Benjamin Smith.

In all, Michigan boasts eight wrestlers seeded the top eight at their respective weight classes.

Sophomore / freshman Dylan Ragusin and junior / sophomore Cameron Amine earned the No. 6 seeds at 133 and 165 pounds, respectively. Ragusin Avenged two earlier-season losses to claim third place at the Big Ten Championships and owns a 22-6 record. He will wrestle Lehigh’s Mclyke Hines in the first round. Amine, a 2021 NCAA All-American, was runner-up at the Big Ten Championships after knocking off Ohio State’s top-Seeded Carson Kharchla, 3-1, in the semifinals. He is 16-5 on the season and will face Nebraska’s Bubba Wilson in the opening round.

Senior Mason Parris received the No. 7 Seeded at heavyweight. Last year’s NCAA runner-up and a 2020 NWCA first team All-American, Parris is 15-4 on the season and placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships. They will wrestle Penn’s Ben Goldin in the first round. Senior Will Lewan, the 2020 NWCA second team All-American, is the No. 8 seed at 157 pounds after earning runner-up honors at the Big Ten Championships. Lewan is 17-5 this season and will open NCAA action against Missouri’s Jarrett Jacques.

Graduate student Stevan Micic rounds out the Wolverine contingent with the No. 24 seed at 141 pounds. A three-time All-American at 133 pounds, including a 2018 NCAA finalist at the weight, Micic is 10-6 this season and placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships. He will wrestle Missouri’s Allan Hart in the first round.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, March 17-19, at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich. The Wolverines are the co-host for the event with the Detroit Sports Commission.
