Women’s Tennis Eases Past Smith, 8-1

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Sophomores Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, NJ), Shanaya Naik (Mumbai, India) and Jane Wang (San Diego, Calif.) And first-year Emily Stouch (Plantation, Fla.) All won in both singles and doubles to help visiting Babson College defeat Smith College, 8-1, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

With its third win in the last four matches, Babson improves to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in league play. Smith has dropped two straight matches to slip to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Stouch and Wang picked up the Beavers’ first point of the match with an 8-1 win at number three doubles and Naik and Moschella followed with an 8-5 Victory at number two. The Pioneers claimed their lone point of the afternoon at number one doubles as first-years Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) And Lily Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) Edged Babson Graduate student Runsi Patro (Woodside, NY) and first-year Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 8-6.

The Green and White dominated in singles winning all six matches in straight sets. Soffer, who is ranked seventh in the region, was a 6-2, 6-0 Winner at number one, Moschella breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 Victory at number two and Stouch rolled to a 6-0, 6- 0 result at number three.

Wang posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at number four, Naik cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 Victory at number five and Patro was a 6-1, 6-0 Winner at number six singles.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Emerson at 11 am, while Smith travels to Wheaton for a 10 am match.

MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are 17-15 all-time against Smith and have won 13 consecutive matches in the series.
• Babson is 21-4 against NEWMAC foes dating back to 2018.
• Soffer and Patro have both won three straight singles matches.
