All eyes will be on Indian paddler G Sathiyan as he is set to compete in the prestigious 2022 WTT Champions in Budapest, Hungary from July 18. It is the largest competition in the Table Tennis World Series and only offers singles competitions for the top 30 male and female players.
Sathiyan, ranked No. 35 in the world, will face the no. 27 Kirill Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan in the first round. Two-time Olympic Champion Ma Long of China is set to claim the title, in a field that also includes World Championship silver and Bronze medalists Truls Moregard and Liang Jingkun.
Unfortunately, there will be no representation of an Indian player in the competition. Otherwise, the roster consists of Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Chen Meng as the number one seed and silver medalist Sun Yingsha as well.
Meanwhile, Sathiyan last competed at WTT Contender Budapest last week, where he teamed up with Manika Batra in the mixed doubles competition. The duo lost in the semi-finals to Hina Hayata and Tomokazu Harimoto from Japan. In the singles competition, he lost to Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the round of 16.
The 2022 WTT Champions will be the last competition for Sathiyan, before the Commonwealth Games, starting July 28.
