Mustangs Fall to No. 12 UCLA Saturday

LOGAN, Utah Playing its second match of the season Saturday, the Cal Poly volleyball team fell to No. 12 UCLA, 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 18-25), in its final match of the Utah State Invitational.

The Mustangs (0-2) were held in check offensively by the No. 12 Bruins (1-1). Cal Poly was limited to a .046 hitting percentage while UCLA hit .240 for the match.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommy Stockham led the Mustangs with 11 kills. Redshirt freshman setter Not Bullis recorded her second straight double-double with 20 assists and a team-high 10 digs.

Cal Poly got out to a 3-1 lead to begin the first set before UCLA went on a 6-1 run to go up 7-4. Down 10-7, the Mustangs rattled off five straight points to take a 12-10 lead before UCLA answered with a 10-1 run to pull away 20-13 before going on to win the set 25-17.

In the second set, the Bruins started by taking a 7-3 lead. The Mustangs eventually climbed their way back to cut the deficit to one at 12-11 and later tied it 15-15. A 4-1 run by UCLA followed to give them a 19-16 advantage. Down 20-17, Cal Poly responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 21 apiece. However, UCLA then scored the next four points to win the set 25-21.

The third set saw the Bruins get out to an 8-4 lead before the Mustangs scored the next three points to get it back to within one. However, that is as close as Cal Poly got it as UCLA went on an 8-1 run to take a 16-9 and pull away for good, going on to win the set 25-18.

The Mustangs will make the drive over to Orem, Utah to take on Utah Valley Monday at 5 pm PT.
