Kohli, who has opened in the past, was once again promoted after Rohit decided to take a rest. The opening pair of Kohli and KL Rahul punished Afghanistan’s bowlers and put up 119 runs for the first wicket in 12.4 overs. After 2 quick wickets, Kohli was joined by Rishabh Pant, who faced 16 balls for his 20 runs in the 87-run partnership with the former India captain.
Kohli kept the scoreboard ticking and smashed 6 sixes during his knock. He also hit 12 boundaries to keep the fielders busy. It was always going to be a tough Chase for Afghanistan and the Mohammad Nabi-led side fell short by a big margin of 101 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a memorable spell of 4-1-4-5 in the win.
Kohli will next be seen in action in the home T20I series against Australia. ‘Hosts’ Sri Lanka and Pakistan will square off in the final of the tournament on Sunday (September 11).
