In yet another Shocking result, on Thursday (October 27), minnows Zimbabwe got the better of Pakistan by 1 run in a closely-fought contest in Perth in the ongoing ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2022. With the second straight defeat in as many matches , Pakistan’s chances of reaching the knockout stages are almost over. They have to win their remaining three matches and also hope for favorable results from other teams.
In Match Number 24, Zimbabwe Skipper Craig Ervine won the toss and opted to bat first, after which they posted a total of 130 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets. It was not a big target, but after losing Skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan early in the innings, it was always going to be a tough task for the Men in Green and, despite fighting efforts from Shan Masood (44) and Mohammad Nawaz ( 22), they couldn’t reach the required total of 131 runs. They managed to reach 129 runs in 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets and fell short by one run.

In the last over, Pakistan needed 11 runs to win the contest, but they only managed nine. Star all-rounder Nawaz, who bowled the final over against India in Melbourne in which he conceded 16 runs, was out at the middle once again and, for the second straight game, failed to take his side through.

They got out on the second last ball of the run Chase when three runs were required from two balls. He was caught by Zimbabwe Skipper Ervine. Shaheen Afridi faced the last ball of the innings against Brad Evans, in which three runs were required. But Afridi could only manage to score a run and was run out in the attempt to complete the second run.

It was a stunning performance by the Zimbabwe side, who were not even able to qualify for the first round last year. Pakistan’s defeat sent shockwaves around the world, and fans were in complete disbelief.

Pakistan’s defeat was the fifth big upset in this year’s T20 World Cup. But certainly, this was the biggest of all because it was a low total which was successfully defended against a team which has the Worlds number one and fourth-ranked T20I batter in its ranks.
