Offense Erupts as Mens Basketball Upends UMBC, 94-64

BALTIMORE Powered by a red hot shooting night and a 14-0 run in the first half, the Princeton University men’s basketball team earned a 94-64 Victory over UMBC Monday night inside the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

The Victory was Princeton’s most lopsided road win since it defeated Hampton, 89-59, on Sunday, January 3, 2016. It also marked the first time the Tigers scored 94 in regulation on the road since Tuesday, March 13, 2012, when it they scored 95 points at Evansville. The Tigers shot 12-for-19 (63.2%) from behind the three-point line, and 37-for-65 (63.2%) from the field, got 38 points off the bench and dominated inside, scoring 48 points in the paint to 28 by the Retrievers.

Junior Matt Allocco led the game in scoring with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 shooting from three, while also tying the game-high in rebounds with seven and handing out three assists. Senior Tosan Evbuomwan added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and senior Keeshawn Kellman went 5-for-9 from the field for 12 points, while adding five rebounds and a career-high four assists.

Off the bench, sophomore Blake Peters went 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from three for a career-high 11 points while also pulling down four rebounds. Freshman Deven Austin scored nine points on 4-for-7 shooting and had three rebounds, while a freshman Jack Scott went a perfect 3-for-3, scoring seven points.

The Retrievers raced out to a 16-4 lead, a pair of free throws by Evbuomwan ignited a 7-0 Princeton run, making it a 14-12 game after a three from the top of the Circle by Peters.

Austin then entered the game, and knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner then finished a reverse layup to give the Tigers a 17-15 advantage with 12:06 left in the half. Shortly after, the Princeton extended its lead further after a layup by freshman Xaivian Lee sparked a 14-0 run, that saw the Tigers surge ahead, 31-17, at 6:54 following back-to-back three-pointers by Allocco.

Another three-pointer by Allocco gave Princeton a 36-19 advantage with 4:38 remaining in the half, and the Tigers would take a 41-27 lead into halftime.

Princeton remained in control in the second half; an Evbuomwa layup at 17:29 led off a 6-0 run that gave the Tigers a 21-point lead, 53-32, with 16:39 left to play following a layup by Austin. An Allocco layup with 12:11 on the clock gave Princeton a 65-47 lead, prior to a media timeout at 11:56.

A three-point play by Evbuomwan extended Princeton’s lead to 20 again, 74-64, with 7:54 on the clock, then back-to-back layups by Evbuomwan saw the Tigers’ lead expand to 23, 81-58, with 5: 36 remaining.

The Tigers extended their lead to 29 points, 88-59, with 3:05 remaining and the Tigers would hold on for the 30-point victory, 94-64.
