Virat Kohli overtook Ricky Ponting to break a drought of 1,214 days

Kishan was the star of the show with his quickfire 210 that helped India post a massive score of 409/8 from their 50 overs in Chattogram, but Kohli’s 44th ODI century and 113 in the innings also played a big role in the visitors’ cruise to an impressive 227-run victory.

It was Kohli’s first ODI century in more than three years and the 34-year-old carried his excellent recent form into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 50-over series in eye-catching fashion.

Kohli’s innings included 11 boundaries and two giant sixes as the right-hander broke a drought of 1,214 days to reach triple figures for the first time since scoring 114* against the West Indies at Port of Spain on August 14, 2019.

It was also Kohli’s 72nd century in international cricket, helping the former India skipper overtake Ponting (71) for most single centuries.

India legend Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 100 international centuries, with Kohli (72) and Ponting (71) now occupying the second and third spots.

And Kohli has the chance to move even closer to Tendulkar’s mark and add to his 44 ODI hundreds if he is selected for India’s separate three-match ODI series at home against Sri Lanka and New Zealand next month.

Kishan credited Kohli’s experience with helping him achieve his own milestone on Saturday and the pair could form an impressive partnership in India’s star-studded top-flight ahead of next year’s 50-over World Cup.

“Batting with Virat bhai… he has such good sense of the game,” Kishan told the host on Saturday.

“He knew which bowlers I had to pick (target).

“He calmed me down when I was 90. I wanted to bring it up in six, but he said I’ll get it in singles because it’s my first.”
