Congo will face Algeria in a do-or-die Group A final at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday, and their head coach Fabrizio Cesana will want his side to have a more potent attack to win the duel.
Congio’s chances of reaching the last eight depend on getting maximum points against the host nation.
A win guarantees them second place in the group and automatic passage to the quarter-finals, while a draw could see them sneak into one of the top two third-placed teams.
We will do everything to win the match, but we know that we will face a strong Algerian team. We have recovered well from the Somalia match and now we will focus on this important victory, the coach said.
Congo began their campaign with a loss to Senegal before drawing 1-1 with debutants Somalia in their last match.
Cesana says one of the things his side failed to do against Somalia was convert chances and has revealed they have been working on their finishing.
Against Senegal, our players lacked composure in front of the goal and we were not effective in the Somalia match either. This is something we need to be better at to get a good result against Somalia, the tactician stated.
French defender Brad-Hamilton Mantsounga said the players know the importance of three points in the game and are ready to fight.
We know very well that Algeria is a strong team and we are ready to face them. The match is of great importance to us and we will give everything to get there, he added.
Congo will be looking to repeat and probably improve on their best ever performance when they reached the semi-finals and finished third in 2011.
