Tennis-Murray says he is one ‘big injury’ away from retirement | Mighty 790 KFGO

(Reuters) Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has vowed to compete as long as his body remains in good shape, but said he is one major injury away from retirement.

Former No. 1 Murray is currently ranked 49th in the ATP rankings after suffering a number of injuries throughout his career, including hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019.

If my body is in good shape and I can still compete consistently, I will continue to play, Murray, 35, said.

But I can’t look that far ahead with age and the problems I’ve had. If I had a major injury, I probably wouldn’t try to recover from it.

Murray said he is in better shape now ahead of the Australian Open, which will be held in Melbourne from 16-29. January.

He was eliminated in the second round of the season opener this year.

“I spent three weeks in Florida, got my body in shape and worked on my game, and it went really well,” Murray said.

I’m definitely in better shape than I was. A lot of work was done in the gym, I tried to work on my stamina and endurance a bit and I hope that will help me next year.

Murray is part of the Scotland squad to face England in the Battle of the Brits exhibition tournament in Aberdeen later on Wednesday and Thursday.
