Union women’s ice hockey aims for a record victory

SCHENECTADY The Union College women’s hockey team is hoping to start 2023 with a record.

The Dutchwomen have a chance to set the Division I program record for wins in a season when they host Saint Michaels on Monday at 1 p.m. at Messa Rink.

A win over Saint Michaels would give the Dutchwomen (9-9-1) their 10th win of the season. The Union’s most wins in a Division I season that began in 2003-04 was nine in 2013-14.

Union won 11 games in its last Division III season in 2002-03.

Union head coach Josh Sciba isn’t focused on a 10th win.

“It just says a lot about how the team is doing, quite honestly,” Sciba said. It’s not important to me at all. I believe that for the team it only means success and growth [and] we are getting better. The fact that the group receives such recognition is something special in my opinion.

With a 1-12-1 record at Saint Michaels, which includes a 13-game winless streak, the Union should have no trouble getting their 10th win. But Sciba doesn’t take things lightly.

We have to show up, Sciba said. We want to build confidence in how we want to play as we try to build the brand again and continue to strengthen our team culture. It’s very important for us to determine how we want to play and to play that game before we get back into the league games, I thought that was crucial for our group.

PAST HISTORY

This will be the fifth meeting between the two programs and the first since the 2002-03 season.

Union leads the series with 4-0 wins. It won 6-0 on 2 December 2001 at Saint Michaels. In the only Messa meeting, the Dutch won 9-2 on January 26, 2002.

The Dutch won a two-game series at Saint Michaels on the 8th-9th. February 2003 by 12–1 and 6–3.
