ESPN’s updated FPI Top 25 after the bowl season includes Alabama at No. 2

The national championship game is all that’s left after a glittering college soccer season that’s one of the most memorable in history, featuring a series of towering, heart-stopping goals. ESPN’s Football Power Index is heading into next week’s Georgia-TCU final updated this week to cover every bowl result so far, including several unforgettable results in New Year’s Six. Alabama, No. 5 in the final regular-season College Football Playoff rankings, is up three spots in ESPN’s FPI after dominating Big 12 champion Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl.

Tulane moved into the top 25 after winning a program-record 12 games with Monday’s 46-45 win over USC, completing the biggest turnaround in college football history. The Green Wave were 2-10 last season before winning the AAC this fall, scoring 16 points in the final four minutes to beat the Trojans in the Cotton Bowl.

Football Power Index (FPI) according to ESPN is “a measure of team strength that is intended to be the best predictor of a team’s performance late in the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Predicted results are based on 20,000 simulations. using late-season FPI, results to date, and remaining schedule . Estimates and forecasts are updated daily.”
