Men’s tennis opened the season against Florida State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team faces high-level competition to open the 2023 season. The Rainbow Warriors open the season on Friday, January 6th at 2:30 PM HT against Florida State, who was ranked No. 22 last season. The Rainbow Warriors’ first four opponents were ranked in the 2022 Top 55. Hawai’i is led by a senior Andre Ilagan which ranks 41st for the year.

NEWS & NOTES

• Hawai’i will look to improve on a standout 2022 season that saw the Rainbow Warriors finish with a 12-6 overall record – their most wins since 2010.
• The ‘Bows finished tied for third place with UC Irvine with a 4-2 Big West record
• In 2022, UH recorded its third consecutive winning season, its longest winning streak since UH’s 12 consecutive winning seasons from 1981-91.
• Last season, Hawai’ie received an ITAteam ranking for the first time since 2012. Rainbow Warriors debuted at #75 on March 23rd and stayed at #26 on April 26th, peaking at #64 on March 30th.
• In 2022, UH snapped an eight-game winning streak – the longest since UH won 14 straight games in 2000 under former head coach Jim Schwitters.
• In 2022, Hawai’i advanced to the Big West semifinals for just the third time and second straight season since joining the conference in 2013.
• Hawai’ita still leadsAndre Ilagan who will begin his senior season at No. 41. Ilagan ranked as the best 2022 player in Rainbow Warrior history. He became just the second UH men’s tennis player (Andreas Weber) to compete in the NCAA Championships. Ilagan was voted Big West Player of the Year, earned Big West first-team honors in both singles and doubles, won UH’s Bonham Award (UH’s highest athletic honor) and academically was voted to the CoSIDA All-Academic District 8 first team.
• The leading UH until 2023 is Axel Labrunie who earned All Big West honors in both singles and doubles last year
• The ‘Bows return seven letterwinners from last year’s team and welcome four newcomers, including a pair of local freshmen. Cole Curate and Andrew Somerville who both competed last fall
