WBB earns 72-63 road win over DePaul

CHICAGO The Marquette women’s basketball team (10-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) picked up a conference road win over DePaul on Wednesday night with a 72-63 victory inside Wintrust Arena.

“I’m just so proud of our effort,” said the Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. “We were without Liza Karlen today and the new players that had to play were great. We made some shots naturally, but our defense was great to make it as hard as possible for (Aneesah) Morrow. I’m just proud of our focus and effort here on the road.”

With Karlen out of the starting lineup due to injury, Marquette used a strong performance out of the gates from the senior guard King of Jordan, who scored the first eight points of the night for Marquette, leading the Golden Eagle offense to its highest-scoring first quarter of the season. Freshman guard Emily LaChapelle Also got off to a fast start, totaling eight points and five boards in the first 10 minutes to help MU take a 26-16 lead into the quarter.

After leading 46-32 at halftime, scoring slowed on both ends as Marquette scored just eight third-quarter points and saw its lead shrink to seven heading into the fourth, but MU responded by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter. as many as 17 points. DePaul eventually cut the deficit to single digits, but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on to secure the win against their longest-running rival.

King finished with a team-best 23 points and a career-high nine assists, while the senior forward Chloe Marotta also came close to a double-double as he had 18 points and nine boards along with four assists, three blocks and a steal.

Playing in his hometown of Chicago, forward Makiyah Williams also pulled down nine rebounds, a new career high for the sophomore.

The Blue Demons were paced by Aneesah Morrow, who had a team-best 24 points and 15 rebounds.

• This was the 132nd game Chloe Marotta, which is now alone in third place all-time in the career. He is two games away from tying Angel Robinson (2007-11) for second in program history.

• King of Jordan The final result was 23 points, nine assists and three rebounds. His nine assists are a career high.

• This was King’s sixth 20+ point game of the season and ninth of his career.

• Makiyah Williams ended the night with a career-high nine rebounds, surpassing his previous career high of four (11/13/22). He also scored a career-high six points in 27 minutes.

• With Liza Karlen out of the game due to injury, Kennedy Myles started the season for the first time at MU.

• The starting lineup of King-Nkumu-La Chapell-Marotta-Myles was the fifth unique lineup Marquette has used this season.

• DePaul’s 63 points were its second fewest in a game all season.

• MU led the match 38:13.

• Marquette finished the game shooting 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from 3-point range and 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the free-throw line.

• With the win, Marquette has taken four of its last five games against DePaul. MU is now 34-49 all-time against DePaul.
