Women’s basketball heads to Columbia for its first Ivy Road game

Cambridge, Mass. – The Harvard women’s basketball team will travel to Columbia for their first Ivy League road game of the season on Saturday, January 14th at 12:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Harvard women’s basketball opened Carrie Moore era this season with seven conference wins and wins over Princeton and Brown to start the Ivy League campaign. Saturday will present the next Ivy opponent for the Crimson in Columbia.

Moore is in his first year since the retirement of Kathy Delaney-Smith, who was at the helm of the Crimson program for 40 years. Moore was named the Kathy Delaney-Smith head women’s basketball coach at Harvard on April 6, 2022, arriving in Cambridge after spending the 2021-22 season as an assistant coach at Michigan, helping the Wolverines to a 25-7 record and a no. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. Moore also worked as an assistant coach at North Carolina, Princeton and Creighton.

Turner Harmony has enjoyed a career season so far this year, scoring a career-high 31 points in the season opener against URI, a career-high 9 assists against Boston College and a career-high 7 steals against Maine. He has scored 20+ points in seven games this season. Turner has collected Ivy League Player of the Week honors twice, Ivy League Player of the Week once and was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team.

In last week’s win over Princeton, Harvard snapped the reigning Ivy League champion’s 42-game Ivy League winning streak and seven-game winning streak over the Crimson.

Lola Mullaney scored a career-high 30 points against the Browns, marking the second game of the 2022-23 season in which a Crimson player has scored 30+ points. He shot 11-15 from the floor and 6-10 from three. Elena Rodriguez also reported a career high in rebounds against the Bears, when he tallied 11.

Four Crimson players hit Brown in double figures in Mullaney (30), Turner (16), Rodriguez (11) and Kate Krupa (10).

Turner Harmony scored 26 points for the Crimson to lead the team against Yale and scored 20 points in the second half alone. He finished the game shooting 10-of-24 from the floor and 2-of-3 from three. This was his seventh game of the season in which he scored more than 20 points.

Turner Harmony leads the Ivy League in points per game with 18.9. He is averaging 18.9 points per game, 5.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He is one of three Division I athletes to average 18+ ppg, 5+ rpg and 4+ ss.

Harvard meets Ivy League rival Columbia for the 73rd time in series history, with Harvard leading 64-8. The Lions are currently on a four-game winning streak over the Crimson and have narrowly won both games in the 2022 season, most recently on February 18, 2022 by a score of 70-74.

Columbia has only recently begun to compete with Harvard, as of 2019 it had won just three games since 1980.

With respective 2-1 Ivy records, the winner of Saturday’s game is tied for first or second place in the Ivy League pending the outcome of the Penn/Dartmouth game.

Harvard’s 2022-23 schedule included 12 non-conference games before Ivy League play began Dec. 31 against Princeton. With a 2-1 Ivy record and a 9-6 overall record, Harvard is currently tied for second with Columbia in the Ivy League standings.
