Antonio Conte says Daniel Levy and Tottenham chiefs should speak to the media

Antonio Conte has questioned why managers like him are left to face all the tough questions while Premier League club chiefs remain silent.

In the fascinating press conference before the trip to Manchester City on Thursday, the Tottenham manager, who was the target of criticism, together with the chairman Daniel Levy, complained why English football cannot follow the model in Italy, when high-level figures have to face the media and deal with e.g. broader club strategy.

However, in North London, the Italian rarely answers questions in public, while Levy does very few interviews and delivers only one chairman’s message a year.

In England, it’s a bad habit to only have the coach to talk and explain. I have never seen a medical department come on here to explain why this player is having trouble recovering. “I have never seen a club or a sporting director come here to explain the club’s strategy and vision,” Conte said.

For example, in Italy before every game there is a person from the club who has to go in front of the media and answer every question. For us, it could be much, much better.

“Because by the way, always only one face explains the situation, which I think the club is better to explain. But this is the way and I respect this way.

Conte has not spoken to Levy or Tottenham about replacing Taku and insisted: I’m not going to ask anything. This type of situation is good for every club: Don’t go to the media.

In such a situation, it is dangerous to always speak to explain this type of situation. The coach must remain silent and accept the situation.

But amid mixed results and frustration among supporters about the club’s direction, Conte suggested it could help avoid misunderstandings if the club occasionally took responsibility for answering questions.

In Italy it’s different, the club’s person during the game week talks and explains many situations. If only the coach talks, sometimes there will be misunderstandings. I think it would be good for the club to be present in the media and speak. Not every week, but at least every 15 days or once a month.

This way it could be easier for you (the media) to understand the situation as well. And you don’t have just one face and always the same face. Believe me, it’s hard because every you [I] telling can be criticism or negative and this is not the truth.
