But when the ball was bowled over the non-striker’s head for Kelly to collect, it required some deflection from Finch’s bat, who grounded it into the crease.

This sent the ball into Kelly’s hands and hit him in the cheek.

The 28-year-old bowler immediately fell to the ground, holding his head in what was clearly significant pain.

And then it turned out that Kelly was bleeding from the mouth and had a cut on her chin.

Doctors rushed to treat the West Australian star, who played cricket for Northamptonshire in the County Championship last season.

Despite getting to her feet and walking unaided, Kelly was unable to continue and suffered a concussion.

Perth won the match and secured their place at the top of the Big Bash League.

They face the Sydney Sixers next week for a place in the finals, but Kelly’s participation is uncertain – although his coach Adam Voges confirmed he walked around and felt a little better after the match.

Australian T20 captain Finch was among those who sent well wishes to the stricken Scorchers man.

Finch said: “It was a freak accident, one of those things.

“I’m upset about it. You don’t want to see anybody get hurt.”

One Twitter wrote: “Good to see Matt Kelly is ok, it was scary for a while.”

Another added: “Good thing Matt Kelly is out and away with no major issues since, no fun getting a cricket ball in the face at any point (or the stadium DJ happily carrying on as if no blood is being spilled on either face I imagine).

And a third commented: “Hope Matt Kelly is ok, looks nasty.”
