Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader Athletics

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women’s tennis team picked up two wins at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Sunday with 4-3 wins over Eastern Michigan and 7-0 over Ashland. With the wins, the Vikings are now 4-1 in the spring and 3-0 in the MMTP.

In the first match of the day, the Vikings battled to a 4-3 win over Eastern Michigan, picking up a doubles point and three singles wins from Oihane Vicario, Bethany Yauch and Sima Heren.

In doubles, Cleveland State’s No. 3 tandem of Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz won 6-4, while Yauch and Heren posted a similar 6-4 win to top the set.

Heren then gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, before Eastern Michigan was able to capture the win at No. 6.

The Vikings responded with a win over Yauch at No. 2 singles as he took a 6-4, 7-5 decision before the Eagles answered again with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 to tie the match at No. 3 -3.

Cleveland State’s tap point was then at the top of the lineup as Vicario picked up a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win to help the Vikings capture a 4-3 team win.

In Sunday’s second game, the Vikings were again able to pick up an early double point, and have now won in double figures in all five games this spring.

At second doubles, the Vikings won 6-0 from Ella Franz and Tereze Vevere, while Fillippa Frogner and Avery Durham won 6-4 at No. 3.

Vevere quickly gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead early in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles before Sima Heren put the Vikings ahead 3-0 with a 6-6 win. 0, 6-2 win from place no. 4.

Oihane Vicario then picked up the winning point for Cleveland State as she earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top of the lineup.

Cleveland State also got wins from Frogner at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-1), Durham at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1) and Bethany Yauch at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-3).

Durham made his Cleveland State debut Sunday after transferring to the spring semester.

The Vikings return to action with a pair of games next weekend, traveling to Bowling Green on Friday, February 3rd and hosting Butler on Sunday, February 5th.
