Horvat’s purchase price too expensive for Red Wings; The Sharks also want three pieces for Meier

Were the Detroit Red Wings really players in the Bo Horvat lottery? All evidence points to at least the team making inquiries from downtown Vancouver.

However, even if the Wings were still players when the deal went down on Monday, the price the New York Islanders paid would not have been one Detroit GM Steve Yzerman would have wanted to pay.

The Islanders ended up shipping forward Anthony Beauvillier, top prospect center Aatu Raty and a 2023 first-round pick to the Canucks in exchange for Horvat. Horvat becomes a UFA at the end of the season. That’s a steep price for a potential rental.

One that Yzerman would hardly use. By comparison, if this deal were put on the Red Wings’ terms, they might have had to package forward Oskar Sundqvist and center prospect Marco Kasper.

Listening to what Yzerman said about his rebuilding plan earlier this season, he wouldn’t want to plan it.

“Right now, my intention is to hold on to our draft picks and continue to draft well or try to draft well and just be patient with these young guys and let them work their way into NHL players,” Yzerman said.
