NEW ORLEANS James Madisons Holden Koons and Daria Afanasyeva earned their first win of the year as they each went undefeated in doubles to earn Sun Belt Conference Tennis Player of the Week honors.
Men’s tennis player of the week
Holden Koons, JMU

Dukes senior Holden Koons went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in JMU’s 7-0 wins over Navy and Mount St. Marys. He improved to 4-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles this spring, all at No. 1. In his match against Mount St. Marys, Koons provided the decisive match point in the Dukes’ win.
Women’s tennis player of the week
Daria Afanasyeva, JMU
(R-Sr., Moscow, Russia)
Dukes redshirt senior Daria Afansyeva went 3-1 as JMU traveled to and won last season’s MAC championship at Ball State. In doubles, he has now won four straight matches with wins over Ball State 6-2 and Louisville 6-4. In singles, he won 6-4, 6-4 in a close 4-3 loss to Louisville.
