Search/Filter: Enter a keyword in the filter/search field to see a list of available words with an “All” option. If necessary, click on the page number. Click on the blue link to look up the word. For best results, type a partial word to see variations of the word.

Letters of the alphabet: It is useful for 1) single letter words (like A, B, etc.) and 2) very short words (eg “to”, “he”, etc.) to delimit words and pages in a list.

For best results, enter a short word in the search field, select a letter of the alphabet (and a page number if necessary) and click the blue link.

Don’t forget to click “All” back when you search for another word with a different initial letter.

If you can’t find (maybe forget) the word, but you can still see the List of Links and keep searching until the links disappear! Sharpen your eye or maybe brush up on your alphabet. 🙂

Add a word: This dictionary is not exhaustive; ASL characters are constantly being added to the dictionary. If you can’t find the word/character, you can submit your request (only if the individual link does not appear in the result).

ASL has its own grammar and sentence structure that works differently than English. Learn plural forms, verb conjugation, word order, etc. grammar in the “Learn ASL” section. Search the dictionary using present tense verbs and basic words. If you’re looking for “said,” look for “say.” Likewise, if you’re looking for an adjective, try a noun, or vice versa. For example, French and French ASL signs are the same. If you are looking for a plural word, use the singular word.
