After declaring at 8-435, the English restricted the Kiwis to just 209 and forced them to bat again as the comeback began.

Kane Williamson’s 132 made him New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer, with two other Kiwis scoring over 80 as the hosts managed 483 for 257 runs.

Yet somehow the English were bowled out just short of the target, especially when Harry Brook – who smashed 186 off 176 balls in the first innings – ran out for a diamond duck.

Ben Foakes tried to take the tail to victory but was caught off the bowling of Tim Southee for 35 with seven runs required.

A Jimmy Anderson boundary almost got the English going, but he was then caught off the bowling of Neil Wagner, giving New Zealand their second one-run win in Test cricket history against the West Indies against Australia in Adelaide in 1993.

It was also the fourth time the team won back to back.

However, Anderson was probably hard done by after what looked to be just one delivery wide before he lost his wicket. If that or several other very close charges in the final overs had got England, the test might have been tied.
