HILTON HEAD, SC After falling into an early hole, the Union College men’s tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat College of Wooster 6-3 in non-conference action Monday morning at Van der Meer Tennis. Center.
Junior Dimitris Binopoulos and a sophomore Ben Jacobs combined for three of the Union’s six wins on the day, earning the team a lone double and a single for each win.
In doubles, Union earned one point to keep within striking distance heading into singles. Up top, Binopoulos and Jacobs earned two early breaks to take a commanding 5-1 lead before holding serve the rest of the way for an 8-4 win. While the other two duals didn’t go Union’s way, the team was still in a good position for a comeback.
Jacobs capped another undefeated day with an early 6-1, 6-3 win over Gabriel Escobar at first singles to quickly level the match at two, thanks in part to five of Escobar’s eight service games.
Wooster regained the lead soon after, but was in second Ian Schunk dropped Connor Streeter 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth flight just minutes later to tie the match again. Schunk picked up the win by coming back from an 0-3 hole in the second frame to break Streeter’s serve three times in a row.
Binopoulos gave Union their first lead of the morning with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alexander Drewes, putting Union within one point of victory. The junior allowed Drewes to win just two of his nine service games on the day.
Union needs to win just one of their last two singles matches, Sr Thomas McGuire and junior Khai Ton both scored victories almost simultaneously to give the Union victory. Ton stormed back from a set down to defeat Patrick Johnson in third singles super tiebreaking to win 4-6, 6-2, (10-1). In sixth singles, McGuire defeated Namit Misra 6-4, 6-3.
After exiting the competition tomorrow, the Union will close out Spring Break with a pair of games on Wednesday, starting with a 9 a.m. matchup against Oberlin College.
