Spiders Drop Tough Match to Delaware Thursday afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. Despite huge individual wins Carly Cohen and Polina Shitikova, the University of Richmond women’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to Delaware on Thursday afternoon to begin a three-match home swing. The Spiders fell to 4-13 with the loss, while the Blue Hens improved to 15-3.

In singles, Adel-Byanu Abidullina (UD) won Leonor Oliveira in a tight match that went to three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 on court one at a time Elizabeth Novak also narrowly fell to Eliza Askarova (UD) in another three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court three.

Shitikova beat Isabella Montana (UD) 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Cohen was able to secure a huge win over Alina Vasilenko (UD) 6-3, 6-2 on the second court. Claire Le Du led against Julieta Honrubia (UD), but left the match 6-4, 5-7, 3-2.

in doubles, Martha Buendia and Le Du picked up a spider victory over Alina Vasilenko/Isabella Montana (UD) 5-4 on court two, while the Blue Hens took court one and three games from doubles point.

The Spiders return to conference play on Saturday, hosting Fordham at noon, while the Rams of Rhode Island travel to Richmond for a 9 a.m. game on April 2.
