LOS ANGELES, CA —Second year student Caden Aoki dealt with USC’s No. 25 baseball team on Friday, giving up just one run in a 7-2 win over the San Diego State Aztecs.
A solid outing of Aoki (2-0) earned him the win on the mound for USC (19-10-1). The right-hander pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven. Senior Kyle the whisk also pitched well, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out two.
Senior Cole Gabrielson led the Trojans offensively, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBIs. Senior Nick Lopez put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Carson Wells also to chip, I’m going 1-4 USC with a double.
The Trojans have now won 14 of their last 17 games and have won five in a row.
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, the Trojans put the first run on the board. Gabrielson put USC on the board with a home run off junior TJ Fondtain.
The situation remained tied at 1-1 until the fourth inning, when the Trojans put the runs on the scoreboard again. Wells managed to score in USC’s only run of the inning, making it 2-1 in favor of the Trojans.
USC held San Diego State scoreless before building a 4-1 lead in the sixth. Freshman Austin Overn and freshman Bryce Grudzielanek came in to score two runs for the Trojans.
The Aztecs battled back and closed the gap to 4-2 until USC added an insurance run in the seventh. The Trojans scored two runs when Gabrielson’s single brought home the senior Adrian Colon-Rosado and Over, bringing USC’s advantage to 6-2.
The Trojans held San Diego State without a run before extending their lead to 7-2 in the next inning. USC got a run on Lopez’s single in Kelena Sauer’s junior contest. The situation remained 7-2 throughout the game, when the Trojans got the win.
