Rowers fill the Big Ten Invitational

East Lansing – Michigan State wrapped up its final day of competition at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota on Saturday in the final day of competition at the Big Ten Invitational.

The Spartans’ freshmen paced Michigan State’s success on the day with a win each. The rookie eighth won by three tenths of a second over Iowa (6:53.706-6:54.00) and open water margins over Tennessee and UCF. Another novice boat was in open water (7:14.447) over both Iowa and Wisconsin. Over the weekend, MSU’s novice boat earned two wins and one runner-up finish to Ohio State, while another novice boat finished second, third and first in its three races.

Michigan State faced a field of ranked crews all weekend, with 15 of the 16 entries either finishing in the CRCA top 20 or receiving votes.

MSU’s entry in the varsity eight (7:16.725) finished fourth behind UCF, about eight-tenths of a second behind third-place UCF. The Knights also finished third ahead of MSU in the 2V8 competition (7:31.897-7:35.299), but by more than three seconds. The Spartans’ eight earned second place Friday morning over both Minnesota and UCF, trailing only UCLA.

Spartan University’s four were four-tenths of a second behind Tennessee (7:15.127-7:16.725) Saturday morning. Meanwhile, UCF’s second four finished third, edging Michigan State (7:39.465) by about three seconds behind the Spartans in each of its first two races over the weekend. SMU won third in the varsity four with a time of 7:24.303, besting three B1G teams in Iowa, Wisconsin and MSU (7:39.465).

Michigan State has a home contest next weekend at Lake Ovid in Laingsburg. Miami, Temple and Tulsa travel to Michigan for a doubleheader.
