Surprise, the Sharks end the season with a loss

The San Jose Sharks close out the season at Rogers Place against the Edmonton Oilers. Noah Gregor scored the second goal, Steven Lorentz added a power play marker, but the Sharks lost 5-2.

Episode 1

3 in: Like that Bordeleau turn. Bouchard bumped, able to hold. A slot pass to Lorentz misses, but then on a reload, Lorentz is able to make a crafty pass to Bordeleau’s rolling spot. However, McDavid all over Bordeleau, so no dangerous shot can be had. But a spark from someone who has struggled a bit.

Janmark’s goal: Thrun does a good job disrupting Janmark’s entry, but the San Jose Sharks can’t win the puck. Then Karlsson, again his pivot, Janmark beats him into the net from a tight spot, gets the rebound.

Draisaitl’s goal: Well, at least the Labanc major wasn’t accepted. Small penalty from the right.

8 in: Peterson can’t get downfield. But then Robins makes a pretty good small area pass to Karlsson, but it was a tough area for EK65, Oilers straight at him.

Gregor’s goal: There’s a lot of good action here. Bordeleau is determined, treacherous in breaking, makes it open Ferraro. Ferraro comes into the zone, draws two Oilers, finds Lorentz in the spot that Skinner rocks. But then Lorentz wins it from Bouchard. Lorentz then finds an open Gregor, shot, bunt, Bordeleau follows, Gregor clears.

You might want to tank and I get that, but you have to love a switch where many of the Sharks young players do a perfect 200ft switch. This is hope.

8 left: Thru’s stretch pass to Gregor? Beaut.

6 left: Robins looks to be in a good central defensive position, then draws a penalty. Good job.

Same PP1 for San Jose Sharks, Thrun-MacDonald-Gregor-Sturm-Bordeleau on PP2. Bordeleau does a good job of finding MacDonald up top.

Peterson gets PK time.

Sharks 5-2 shots at even strength. Good effort so far despite the scoreboard.

Episode 2

1 in: Bordeleau pulls McDavid to the net to go around. I really like his game tonight.

Bouchard’s goal: Ugly hockey there. Hertl too fine in the clear, can’t get far enough, easy counter attack, Bouchard revealed in fire drill.

6 in: I like Robins’ OZ trade for Ekholm. That’s some sandpaper. But then that line can’t get off the ice, a minute plus shift. But there are promises.

Kane penalty: Sharks call timeout to get PP1 out after an extended delay penalty. Well, you can’t say that Quinn is tanking!

Janmark’s goal: Karlsson is tired, that’s understandable, but he takes the pass instead of the man there. Left Reimer out to dry. FWIW I’m not sure a tired Karlsson could have caught Janmark this late in his PP turn. So that may have been part of Karlsson’s calculations, his best chance to kill the game could have been to attempt a jump pass.

Lorentz goal: Looks like another pass from Peterson. Nine points in 10 games for Peterson.

You took 15-8 shots in all situations, according to the Natural Stat trick, 9-6 against High-Danger 5-5. The Sharks have played pretty well, overall.

Episode 3

Kane penalty: Beat Bordeleau’s fine find to the spot. TB beats it, it was grade A.

3 in : Lorentz splits from Ryan, blueline to blueline, duh. I didn’t see that coming. Then Bordeleau high finds an open weakside winger Labanci.

10 in: Simek DD to Knyzhov creeps down, good chance. Simek has a bit of that in his game, just not consistently enough.

9 to go: Robins maybe a little slow to close down Kostin. All Janmark has to do is lift it over Reimer’s outstretched pad, great save.

7 left: Great work by Robins, on the wall by Kostin and another Oiler, helps Ferraro kill the play.

Kane’s Goal: The Sharks lose track of Kane with Kane high after Thrun.
